In the early 1900′s Fredrick Brummer came to the United States from the Saxton region of Germany. In 1904 he, along with his wife Catherine, established Brummer’s Confectionery in Jersey City, New Jersey. Making ice cream & candy in this location was a booming business because of all the trolleys & carriages heading into Manhattan. They all passed by the store.
As they passed the store on their way into the city it became a part of the day to stop off at Brummer’s. Later a luncheonette was added to service all the traffic.
Fredrick & his wife had two children, Fred Jr. and Charles Brummer. This turned out to be the second generation. Fred had four children, two of whom have continued on the third generation..
Bob & George now continue the tradition in Westfield, New Jersey and Vermilion, Ohio. Keeping the same family recipes, they use the finest quality ingredients in all their chocolates & candies.
Bob Brummer developed kidney failure in 2002 due to being diabetic since the age of 18. With the help of a very strict diet he was able to avoid dialysis for a few years, however a kidney transplant was needed.
In 2005 testing was done on several candidates and found a match with his wife Sandy. The transplant was done in November of 2005 with success! A group of some awesome people helped to arrange a fund raiser to help with the medical costs. Over 400 people showed up to be part of the event.
No longer having a luncheonette or ice cream parlor has allowed the two to concentrate solely on their chocolates & candies. in Jersey City, New Jersey.
